Haines City began when platted circa 1885, when the railroad reached the area, originally there was no station and the town was called Clay Cut, until the residents lobbied the Railroad Company and offered to rename their town Haines City after the then President of the Railroad, Colonel Henry Haines. The Town was officially incorporated into Polk County in 1914 with the original occupants planting Citrus Plants, which has been the mainstay it's economy.
The explosive growth of Haines City along with neighboring towns and cities is largely due to it's proximity to Disney and the Orlando area, although Legoland has provided Haines City with it's own theme park for which it is rightly proud.
